Turn off the TV, Chump

tv-pokerNow, I’m not what you’d call an expert at poker, but I have a very, very healthy interest in the game, and have since the early, wayback days of my teenage years.  I’ll never make it to the World Series, but I know enough about the game to know that some pieces of “advice” are actually just enough to make you lose butt tons of money if you aren’t careful.  Thanks to the fever pitch of this particular game, it’s easy to forget to be careful.  You get so caught up, you get on one winning streak, and you think you can’t possibly lose.  Then, suddenly, you find that your life has suddenly begun to mimic one of those bad Las Vegas movies, except there’s no cool soundtrack and no one’s going to take pity on you and give you a quarter so you can try to win back all your money from scratch.

You know what gets a lot of folks — regular folks, like you, and you, and me — into this kind of trouble?  It’s all due to the growing trend of televised poker games.  Now, don’t get me wrong, those things are awesome.  But look, just because you’ve watched every single episode of Celebrity Poker Showdown ever does not mean you are now a professional player.  Because, guess what?  In a real casino, you don’t get to see everyone else’s cards on a television monitor.
